Andries van Leeuwen
Andries van Leeuwen (2 May 1946 - 23 July 2013)
“Made in Holland”
Andries grew up in a fishing family in Katwijk aan Zee, Holland/The Netherlands. Perhaps that is where his love for seascapes comes from.
In the mid-seventies he started making pen drawings with East Indian ink. Despite a busy job and a young family, he found the time to study art where he learned to paint landscapes and still lifes.
In the years that followed he regularly followed painting courses with fellow artists to further develop himself. He read many art books and visited museums at home and abroad to “copy the art”. He also trained himself in making paint and varnishes and was always experimenting with various materials.
His way of painting is somewhere between “Rembrandt” and “The Hague School”. Oil on panel, occasionally on canvas. He also made several murals and a theatre curtain of tens of meters long.
Andries made hundreds of paintings in his life. He often painted on commission and the work was sold before it was finished. He also exhibited regularly and his work was sold to art lovers at home and abroad.
He always signed his work in two ways. Of course with his name. But in addition, his second "signature" can (almost) always be seen, namely three birds together in the sky.
